Welcome to the Work, Family, & Health Network Website!

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a grants program, called the "Work, Family and Health Network," to better understand the relationship between work stress and the health of workers, their children, and other dependents. Researchers in the Network are launching a number of creative projects. Topics include the impact of daily stressors on health, the influence of worker control ("work latitude") on job strain and health, and the spillover effects of work stress on the health of workers and their families. The researchers eventually expect to identify cost-effective ways to reduce work stress and increase the health of workers and their dependents.

The Network is composed of interdisciplinary research teams from the University of Minnesota, Penn State University, Harvard University, Portland State University, Michigan State University, Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research and the Research Triangle Institute at the University of North Carolina. The Network goals are to conduct evidence-based research in the area of work and family programs and policies; to introduce health and well-being as the primary outcomes of interest in this area of research; and to improve the health of workers, their families and employers by providing the scientific evidence on the effects of change in the workplace.

Funding for the Network is provided by a cooperative agreement between: the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH); and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
